Padron - Empadronamiento

If you are settling in Spain and wish your children to attend the local state school, you must first be registered on the Empadronamiento.

This is surprisingly easy and you need not have your residencia or have a NIE number. Just go to the local Town Hall (Ayuntamiento) with passports, copy of escritura (deeds) if a property owner, or rental contract if not, and ask to register.

You will be given a Volante de Empadronamiento - a document confirming your entry on the towns register of residents.

This is also an important document to fill out for the town itself. The central government awards grants and subsidies to towns depending upon the number of residents recorded on the empadronamiento. Due to the influx of people the infrastructure of Caudete has improved greatly over the last few years, including the new function hall and the indoor pool.
